The Chenille Story

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime
And departing leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints that perhaps another
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother
Seeing shall take heart again.”

~ Longfellow

The Soul of Chenille

If ever there were a fabric to tell the story of a human life, it’s chenille. Truth be told, very few vintage chenille bedspreads still in existence today are “perfect” – the vast majority will have a hole or two (or many more!), wear to the tufts in places, a snag or loose threads, old mended rips or tears…Yet, they’re still perfectly “alive” and ready to be used again in a bedroom or re-purposed into something else by a creative soul.

The Tapestry of Life

We like to think that’s how us humans are…Over a lifetime, we get the occasional snag. We come a little undone sometimes, a bit unraveled (ok, maybe totally unraveled!). Every so often something happens and it feels like a small piece of us is missing. Other times, it feels like something bigger is missing in our life, yet we aren’t exactly sure just what that something is.

And then there are the times we’d rather avoid under any circumstance. That’s when you feel like you’ve been totally ripped open…and you wonder if anything could ever mend the tear. Indeed, life scars all of us. What matters is what we do with it…how you extract the meaning from something that happens and use it to grow, to learn, maybe even to reinvent yourself, and hopefully in some small way, to help someone else along their own path…

A Life Well-Lived…

Like a lovable old piece of chenille, not one person walking this beautiful Earth is perfect. Under whatever titles we wear, whatever garments we wrap ourselves in, whatever facade we hide behind when we’re out in the world…we all get a little damaged and bruised sometimes.

We each show ourselves differently, yes. But we’re all hiding scars and old hurts and rough mends behind a thin, illusory veil. The CEO who seems polished and “invincible” might simply be hiding his “mends” better than someone with a weathered face that tells the story of a colorful life well lived.

Embrace the Imperfections

Most of us have done things we’re proud of, and other things we’d prefer to forget…Thing is, each little “imperfection”, each little mend…and yes, the rips and tears too…make us who we are. That’s the beauty of life – and that’s the beauty of chenille and why we love it so much.

If you’re looking for perfection, it’s not the fabric for you. But if you want something warm and filled with the love and energy only many generations could create (and a dash of nostalgia, too!), well, then…you’ve found your match!

Chenille is often described as “wearing a hug” (and if you’ve ever donned a robe or wrapped yourself in an old chenille bedspread, you know what we’re talking about!)…

So, from us to you…

Big Chenille Hugs,

Claire & Emily
